Charmed Creations Events’ Make People Aware event overall was a successful challenge. As a team of five, we worked together on the organization, planning, marketing and promotion of our breast cancer-related event.

Our finalised idea for our event was to put on a cake sale supporting CoppaFeel charity, and open up a stall for university students and staff to create awareness and offer information and advice relating to breast cancer. During the beginning phases of our planning and research, we found facts and figures about breast cancer that bought to our attention both men and women suffer from breast cancer. It is a disease that can come to anyone at any time, however, screenings and support are offered more to those in their middle ages. We wanted to bring attention to the correct ways in which you need to check your breasts..how, when and why! We wanted to fill in the gaps for the ages that aren’t given as much medical and support.

When starting our stall at 12 pm, we found that we had a considerably slow start, we evaluated that this was because of how we were presenting ourselves and how we weren’t interacting with the students and staff of BCU. This created a feel from afar that we were just a cake sale. With an additional cake sale on around the corner at the front of the university, this then put students off and we weren’t getting any attention to our information on offer or our sales.

We adapted our approach swiftly and changed the way we were presenting the table. Instead of hovering behind it looking ready to sell, we all spread out around the space we had to be ready to inform, interact and offer advice. Taking the pressure off selling cakes worked well for us, and in fact, more people began to visit our table purely for the leaflets, booklets and cards we had available to them rather than to buy a cake and donate to the charity. It was those students and teachers that had either been affected by breast cancer themselves or in their family or those that just loved the boob decorated cupcakes that were the ones donating.
